The primary reason for software is digital capture development and that is what I started with. A simple program to accomplish on task, resize photos so they would load quicker on line.  Software needs are just like cameras and camera equipment, starting simple and progressing in complexity.  There are always new requirement and capabilities to fit those requirements.  As the software became more complex, I needed bigger and faster computers.

I use Adobe Lighroom 5 for most tasks and I have Photoshop CS 6 and Photomatrix for a few of the odd task.  Oh, they run on a ASUS computer with a 13-inch display, i5 processor and 128 GB SSD.  I 500 MB USB 3.0 disk drives for asset storage and backup. I also have a Mac and HP Windows Home Server.

I use Microsoft RichCopy to backup assets to a working backup each time assets are added and a safe stored back which is updated monthly.

Asset workflow is, load photos onto USB 3.0 drive, build full size lightroom preview.  I rename photos using a template that contains the photo name, shooting date in year-month-day sequence and original camera sequence number.  Photos are stored in a folder and key words are applied at import time.  I select and rate photos, make development adjustments, add titles and descriptions to selected photos and load GPS information.  Any rejected photos are removed from the system.  I then back up the assets (photos and database) to the daily back drive.  Then, I format the camera card.

I use Digimarc to protect my photos from unauthorized use.  It is an easy process that takes place when I out photos from Lightroom.

I use X-Rites color munki display to keep my display insync with my photo print suppliers.  Watch for my story about why I use print suppliers Southeastern Camera and Fotomoto.

The Photographers Ephemeris is an iPad application that I use to plan my photo shoots.  The application shows the orientation of the sun and moon in relation to the landscape and includes times for sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset, astronomical twilight, nautical twilight and civil twilight.  I do not leave home without it.

I use controlmynikon to take photos in studio.

I use Zerene stacker to assemble high depth of field photos.

Simple DOF is another iPad application that calculates hyper focus distances for a camera, lens and f-stop.
